Many people don't know that Holland, whose capital, Amsterdam, welcomes the bulk of tourism in the area, is only the most important historical region of the Netherlands. Amsterdam is the city of bicycles; as it is flat, everyone from the ordinary citizens to the Royal Family, uses them as a regular mode of transport. The city's most notable attractions are the Van Gogh Museum, the Rijksmuseum and the Anne Frank House. Other highlights in the Netherlands are the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier (Oosterscheldekering), built after the floods of 1953 and the cities of The Hague, Rotterdam, Maastricht and Gouda. The latter holds a cheese market every Thursday.
