The Latvian Republic is characterised by vast forests, low mountains, lakes and rivers - which flow into the Baltic Sea -- and the Gulf of Riga. Some of the country's major highlights are the ports and beaches that stretch along its nearly 500 km of coastline. To the south lies the Zemgale plain, where cereal cultivation is abundant. Latvia is a land of contrasts, renowned for its cycling tourism; touring the country by bike is simply a pleasure. In addition, the rivers Guaja, Aiviekste and Salaca are ideal for canoeing or kayaking.
