Places to visit near Ponte Vecchio

As a city so full of great artists, patrons, architects and important historic characters, there is always something to see in every corner of Florence. If you stay in an apartment near the Ponte Vecchio, just to go for a walk to run into all the wonderful images. However, there are things that you can not miss during your visit to Florence. It is not only the great treasures of the city, but also some of the most important attractions in Italy and Europe. Here we present a summary of the most important:

  • Monument to Benvenuto Cellini. On the same Ponte Vecchio, you will see a sculpture in honour of the artist Benvenuto Cellini. This set of bust and fountain was made by Raffaello Romanelli in 1901, in celebration of the 400th anniversary of the birth of the honouree, one of the most renowned Italian sculptors of the Renaissance, who was even a disciple of Michelangelo.
  • Santa María del Fiore Cathedral. This impressive church is one of the most important architectural works of the early Renaissance. It is particularly attractive for its façade, designed by Arnolfo di Cambio. Its dome was made by Filippo Brunelleschi, the frescoes by Giorgio Vasari, its bell tower was designed by Giotto, and the baptistery with bronze doors was created by Ghiberti. It is considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, as is all the historic centre of the city.
  • Uffizi Gallery. This museum, one of the most famous museums in the world, is located in the historic centre of Florence, about three minutes walk from the Ponte Vecchio, next to Piazza della Signoria. It shows its invaluable collection of Renaissance works, including works by Michelangelo, Durer, Raphael, Giotto, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Sandro Botticelli and Leonardo da Vinci.
  • Basilica of Santa Croce. From the Ponte Vecchio, walk about fifteen minutes through one of the most beautiful areas of Florence, and you will find the "Santa Croce", or "Basilica of the Holy Cross", built in Renaissance style by Arnolfo di Cambio. It has the honour of being the largest Franciscan church in the world. In it, you can see works by Cimabue, Giotto, Brunelleschi, Donatello, Giorgio Vasari, Lorenzo Ghiberti and Antonio Canova, among others.
  • Academy Gallery. From Ponte Vecchio, you can reach this famous gallery with a walk of only 15 minutes through the picturesque centre of the city. It is mainly visited because it houses the David by Michelangelo, the striking marble sculpture of the 1500. It also has other sculptures by the same artist in a room that bears his name, wich also holds works by other artists, such as Botticelli, Pontormo, Filippino Lippi and Ghirlandaio.
  • Palazzo Vecchio. This palace is only four minutes walk away from the Ponte Vecchio, on the Piazza della Signoria (as well as the Uffizi gallery). In addition to the impressive architectural structure, you can enjoy a museum called "dei Ragazzi" inside, which houses works by Michelangelo, Giorgio Vasari and Bronzino.
  • Bargello Museum. Less than 10 minutes on foot from the Ponte Vecchio, this palace has one of the most outstanding collections of Renaissance sculpture in the world. There you can see works by the masters Michelangelo, Donatello, Ghiberti and Benvenuto Cellini, among other classic exponents of this incomparable city.

How to get to Ponte Vecchio

To get there by public transport from Florence airport, you must take two buses: the R003 from Firenze-Peretola to the Porta a Prato stop and then take the C3 bus towards Piazza Beccaria from Leopolda to Bardi. The trip will take half an hour.

From the Santa Maria Novella central train station, take the D line from Stazione Galleria to Bardi, a few meters from Ponte Vecchio. This bus trip will take about ten minutes. If you prefer to travel by taxi, the estimated time is similar.
