Tignes is part of the Savoy department, a French community located in the Rhone region at the Alpine border with Italy. Europe's second most famous ski resort is found in Tignes at an altitude of 3,456 meters. It has 156 ski slopes spread over 300 kilometers, some of which are famous for being for professionals. La Sache is one of these slopes, which descends directly from Aiguille Percée to Les Brévières. There are also coveted virgin slopes whose routes descend close to the normal ski slopes, inviting the most daring athletes to conquer them. The resort has 88 lifts, of which the Funiculaire Grande Motte is the most spectacular, rising to a height of 3,400 meters. The ski slopes at Tignes are open ten months a year, due to their location in the immediate vicinity of the Grande Motte glacier.
The high mountain climate and low year-round temperatures are ideal for practicing all types of winter sports and activities such as ice skating, snowboarding, dog sledding and paragliding. The dam of the Isère River was built in 1952 and five years later the current village was built at an altitude of 2,100 meters. Around the lake are the Le Lavachet, Val Claret and Tignes-le-Lac districts. The area has beautiful landscapes and the villages boast traditional Savoyard architecture. The mountain roads are in excellent condition, so much so that in 2007, for the eighth stage of the classic cycling tournament, the Tour de France, it was chosen as part of the route due to its ideal roads for evaluating the performance of the cycling teams.
Not everything here is ski and sport; there are also great shops specializing in clothing and equipment for practicing snow sports and an excellent selection of restaurants, although they are on the expensive side. Many visitors prefer to rent an apartment with a kitchen and save on eating out every day. For those who are active 24 hours a day, there are great places to go and get a drink in the evening as well as nightclubs where you can finish off the night. If you've been thinking about going on a different type of holiday then all of these entertainment options are waiting for you at Tignes, but you should rent an apartment ahead of time to avoid problems in booking accommodation.
Just like the people who can't relax if they don't have the sea as a backdrop, there are others who love the mountain air, the feeling of freedom and the challenges that come from snow and heights. Tignes has spectacular accommodations to accompany all of these emotions, which can be experienced to the fullest here, and a selection to suit all tastes and budgets. There are luxurious hotels in the area for those who love to live large, however, their beauty comes at an expensive price. You must also factor in the cost of restaurants and other expenses related to leisure. For this reason, many prefer to rent apartments. They are beautiful, with great views, spacious, bright, and independent with the capacity to accommodate several people and you can save on the cost of restaurants. All the Tignes apartments are well-equipped with kitchens, a washing machine and dryer, and Wi-Fi. Studios are another great alternative for those traveling alone. B&Bs are even more reasonably priced, and are a pleasant type of accommodation for those traveling with only a snowboard as luggage. The choice of accommodation is in your hands.
