The Rich History of Alcala de Xivert

Alcala de Xivert is best known for its important role in the Middle Ages. In 1234, James I of Aragon captured the Moorish castle of the city which, at the time, was based in a pivotal point along the Mediterranean Coast. It was a strong position to control the region and spidering routes from. When James I of Aragon overthrew the Arabic control, he resettled the city with Christian villagers, though you can still see the Arabic influence in the architecture and even the name of the city (al-galat means "the castle" in Arabic).

Over the years, the city's role shifted to one that favoured tourism, thanks to its collection of beautiful beaches and the marina that sits at the edge of the coastal villages. Even so, there is still plenty of history to discover in Alcala de Xivert and its surrounding regions, made available to visitors through monuments, museums, convents, and castle ruins tucked away in the curves and peaks of the Sierra de Irta.

Whichever aspect of the city you're looking to explore, our Alcala de Xivert apartments provide the perfect base to get around from. They're cosy, comfortable, and cheap, so you can focus on making the most of your time in the city.
