Apartments in Zermatt: Accommodation in the Snow

Zermatt apartments – Apartments in Zermatt

Zermatt is located in the Swiss Alps at 1,620 meters above sea level in the Swiss Valais canton below Matterhorn. Its mountainous climate with cold temperatures nearly year-round makes it ideal for all winter sports and a meeting point for ski enthusiasts. It's renowned for the Matterhorn Mountain, its amazing ski resorts, and for being one of the few places left in the world that cannot be accessed by car. To get here you must travel to Brig then catch the train to Matterhorn Gothard Bahn. The journey passes through the districts of Sankt Niklaus, Randa and Täsch. If you are travelling by car you must leave it in Täsch and get the train or an electric taxi that will take you up the last stretch of the climb in 12 minutes. Zermatt was founded in the nineteenth century with the arrival of British alpinists who were drawn to the majestic Matterhorn. The naturists came next in the search of ski slopes. The tourism and hospitality industry grew as a result, which significantly increased in the second half of the twentieth century thanks to the advances in transportation and the middle class's incorporation into the tourism industry.

Matterhorn is the most photographed mountain in the world. It's famous among mountaineers and climbers for the myths that have surrounded its ascent. The first people to try and take on the famous mountain were Italian Jean Antonio Carrel and British Edward Whymper. The story goes that on July 14th, 1865, Whymper beat Jean Antonio Carrel's team and was the first to reach the summit together with the British Alpinists Lord Francis Douglas, Charles Hudson and Douglas Hadow, guided by Michael Croz, Peter Taugwalder and his son of the same name. On the descent, Hadow slipped falling on Croz who then dragged down Hudson and Lord Douglas with the rope. They all died on Matterhorn's glacier. In July of 2015, to commemorate Whymper's triumph and the Matterhorn tragedy, the guides office in Zermatt opened the new refuge for alpinists and climbers with highly secure equipment and began offering counseling prior to the ascents.

Apart from the myths, Zermatt is a very entertaining place to visit both day and night. There are all different kinds of sports activities during the day, including its 400 kilometers of famous hiking trails, which can be explored with snowshoes in the winter. There are also areas for mountain biking, wildlife observation and astronomy, as well as other fun things for kids. You can go on family outings to tiny Alpine villages, or sample its luxurious gastronomy and the many restaurants that can be enjoyed by both parents and children. At nighttime there are bars, taverns and nightclubs. As you can see, everything here is intended for having a great time in this wonderful Alpine village, so check out our catalogues and rent an apartment in Zermatt and see for yourself that we have the best selection at the best, most competitive prices.

How to Get to Zermatt

It takes three and a half hours to get from the Geneva-Cointrin International Airport to Zermatt. You should keep in mind that the mountain roadways are closed off when it snows and traffic is suspended because of how windy and narrow they are. It's best to take the InterRegio from the airport to Brig, where you should switch to the Matterhorn Gothard Bahn train that takes you Zermatt. Getting around by taxi isn't recommended as they are expensive and can only take you to Täsch. To keep going you'll have to get the electric taxi or train that brings you to Zermatt. If you've considered renting a car, be aware that it's complicated since you'll have to park in Täsch at an additional cost, and you'll then have to get up to Zermatt by taxi or train.
