In the centre it's hard to believe you're in a capital city, with its quiet atmosphere, leafy riverside views and its limited traffic, but grab a coffee on a sunny terrace and you wouldn't want to be anywhere else in the world. For the more active traveller, Ljubljana is a gem too, with hikes up to the city castle and plenty of green spaces to explore around the city. The city's increasingly youthful vibe means Ljubljana accommodation consists mainly of trendy boutique hotels and lively hostels, but there are also plenty of high-end hotels to choose from, too. Guest houses also provide a popular place to stay in the historic part of the city, whilst numerous apartments dotted around offer unique and independent accommodation options.
Life is laidback and easy in Ljubljana, with a youthful atmosphere that is filled with quirky culture and fun ways to pass the time. Follow the lead of the locals and get around the city by bike, one of the best ways to explore. The historic centre of the city of off-limits for cars, so cycling is a great way to take it all in quickly.
If you get a little thirsty on your travels, duck into one of the many craft beer bars that are popping up all over the city. This new phenomenon is proving to be hugely popular for both locals and tourists alike, and it's the perfect way to sample some of Slovenia's local flavours. The best part? In many of the bars you can grab some tapas nibbles to keep the hunger at bay. If you're looking for a more substantial meal, though, check out the street food that you can find all around the city. Grab a handheld snack and continue exploring.
As evening falls, you'll want to head to Metelkova, a part of the city that has been transformed from military barracks into a lively nightlife venue. Here, you'll find plenty of hipster bars and clubs decorated in a shabby chic style set against a backdrop of colourful street art.

Ljubljana airport is really close to the city centre, making the journey into town extremely easy and affordable. From the airport terminal you can hop on one of the regular buses that travel to Ljubljana's central bus station. Here, everything is within easy walking distance, or you can hop in a cab if you have lots of luggage.
Alternatively, you can get a private transfer from the airport or grab a taxi from outside the terminals. The drive into town is quick and takes in some breath-taking scenery along the way.
Once you're in Ljubljana, it's unlikely you'll need to use any public transport unless you're looking to take day trips to nearby attractions. The majority of things to do are all within walking distance of each other and the small size of the city means cycling is the preferred way to travel for most locals and tourists. If you want to explore Lake Bled and other nearby landmarks, there are plenty of buses that leave daily from the city's main bus station.
