A Mix of History and Nature - Things to do in Palma de Mallorca

  • Bellver Castle -- Set on a hill 3km to the north of Palma, this bastion of Gothic design was built back in the 1300s as a residence for King James II of Mallorca. It is one of Europe's only circular castles.
  • Palma Cathedral -- Also known as La Seu, Palma Cathedral is situated in the heart of the city and its impressive spires and intricate design was built on the remains of an Arab mosque.
  • Royal Palace of La Almudaina -- Originally an Arabian Fort, this palace was, at one point in time, the official royal residence. Today it sits looking out over the city, surrounded by manicured gardens and incredible views.
  • Es Baluard -- This is Mallorca's modern and contemporary art museum. It was founded back in 2004 and exhibits a range of works by Balearic artists as well as those from further afield.
  • Serra de Tramuntana -- A beautiful mountain range that spans Mallorca. Here, you can find a number of nature hikes peppered with turquoise lagoons.
  • Cuevas del Drach -- Situated not far from the island's capital, these cave formations offer a natural and mind-blowing walk through ancient history.
  • Ferrocarril de Soller -- This interurban railway system connects up the towns of Soller and Palma with 3ft narrow gauge tracks.

The Best Beaches of Palma de Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca is a popular hotspot for sun-seekers who are on the hunt for some sun and sand. Its idyllic location in the Mediterranean Sea provides it with a pleasant climate year round, and there are a number of sprawling beaches that offer the perfect place to kick back and relax.

To the west of Palma de Mallorca you'll find the Cala Major beach, which is a wide stretch of sand popular with locals and tourists in the summer months. It offers uninterrupted views out to sea and there are plenty of bars, museums, and restaurants that line its perimeter to keep you busy. To the east of the city there's Playa de Palma, which sprawls out for almost 5km. This is Palma's best-known beach and gets very busy during the summer months. The Ancient History of Palma de Mallorca

As well as beaches, Palma de Mallorca boasts an incredibly rich history. It has been inhabited by civilisations since 5000BC, before it was invaded and taken over by the Romans in 123BC. Its history only became widely known back in the 1950s, when tourists began flocking to its shores to experience its past life and to glimpse the remains of ancient civilisations.

Throughout its life, Mallorca has seen a whole host of invasions for such a small island. The most famous invasion took place in the 1300s and was led by King James I of Aragon. He attacked the city with a huge army of 1500 horse and 15000 men -- a number that the small island couldn't compete against. Today, the La Seu, also known as Palma Cathedral, is the island's most important historic site. It was erected over the remains of an old mosque in 1229 after King James' invasion, but work on it wasn't finished until a few centuries later, in 1601.

Public Transport in Palma de Mallorca

Getting to our apartments in Palma de Mallorca is easy with the range of public transport available. The island is serviced by the Palma de Mallorca Airport, which offers a variety of methods for getting around the island and into the city. The City Buses are the best way to get around, and there are a number of routes that travel from the airport terminals to various locations around the city. They also provide a great form of transport when you're in the city, if you want to quickly get from one attraction to another or explore more of the island.

Alternatively, you can hop in a taxi from outside the airport terminals. The journey is quick, depending on traffic, and prices are very reasonable.
