Unique Artisan Activities in Venice

Aside from the major tourist attractions in Venice, there are also a huge amount of once-in-a-lifetime experiences to be had throughout the city, from participating in an elaborate masked ball at one of the Palazzos to learning how to cook with an experienced Italian chef. Art and culture lovers will be in their element, too, with trips to the nearby islands of Burano and Murano to learn about the local glass-blowing craft.

Arrive in Venice in Style

Venice is mainly served by the Marco Polo Airport , which is situated 12km outside of Venice, but there's also the smaller San Giuseppe Airport which sits 30km from the city centre and is frequented by low-cost carriers.

Both airports provide good connections into the centre of Venice, with regular, reliable buses that link up to the Piazzale Roma bus station and Mestre, plus there is a fast ferry from Marco Polo airport into the heart of Venice.

As it's surrounded by water, Venice is often reached by boat, and there are regular ferries that sail from surrounding countries including Greece, Croatia, and Slovenia.

Vaporettos and Gondolas -- How to Get Around Venice

Venice is such a unique city because it has very few land-based vehicles. The main mode of transport for getting around the city is Vaporetto, or water taxis, which expertly traverse the canals. There are numerous lines, routes, and stops throughout the city, which link up all of the major hotspots as well as the islands that sit further out.

For a more classic form of getting around grab a gondola ride which will provide a much more intimate experience, though it's slightly pricier than other public options.

The vast majority of sights in Venice are within walking distance of each other, so it's highly recommended that you wander the streets on your own two feet -- a great way to discover hidden gems and really get to know this ancient city.

Live like a local in lesser-known Venice

Exploring Venice like a local means getting lost in the winding labyrinth of streets and ducking into cute curiosity shops and intimate bars. Head to the Quattro Fontane on a Tuesday for the local market which sells all manner of goods, from clothes and shoes to food and household items, wander through lesser-known neighbourhoods like Canneregio and Castello where kids play in parks and elderly Venetians catch up on gossip, and visit the Rialto Market early before the crowds draw in to pick up the best fish and freshly picked vegetables.

If you're looking to live like a local in Venice, book one of our boutique apartments that can be found in the lesser-known parts of the city.
