Mijas is an Andalusian town in the province of Malaga on the Costa del Sol. Its main activity is tourism thanks to the unique beauty of its coast and mild climate, with moderate winters and hot summers. It's considered to be a multicultural city due to the percentage of foreigners that arrived as tourists and have remained as residents. Mijas consists of three urban centers each located far away from the others: Las Lagunas, La Cala and the city itself. La Cala is on the coast and the city is in the mountains. Another factor that attracts tourists is the local culture with a leisurely pace of life, inherited from a touristic past that achieved a balance between the demands and speed of foreign tourists with the quiet pace of the locals. Throughout the year there are festivals and pilgrimages where the fandango de Mijas is danced. There is also awide panorama of international events, among them is the Biennale de Arte de Villa de Mijas and the Villa de Mijas Theatre Festival. Don't miss out on adding flamenco to your list of activities, a festival takes place in August dedicated to highlighting the gypsy spirit. In the summer months there are often evening concerts. Among the curiosities in Mijas are the donkey-taxis, the city council is responsible for providing city parking for the donkeys. Other sights include the irregularly shaped Plaza de Toros, the Moorish remains of the old Arab wall and the Church of Immaculate Conception built in the ninth century. The Carromato de Mijas is a museum with unique miniatures from around the world. It's one of the most popular sites in Mijas. The flyers and pamphlets of the museum say it all: Fleas dissected and dressed, a ballet dancer carved into a toothpick, a battle ship on the head of a needle pin, The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci on a grain of rice, etc. The museum has close to 360 miniatures and will provide you with a magnifying glass in order to see them all. Admission costs €3 for adults and €1.50 for kids.
At the Plaza de la Libertad is the Museo Histórico-Etnológico de Mijas, which recreates the history of the old farmers and fishers in Mijas. You can see interesting collections of crafts, farming and fishing tools, oils mills and a replica of a bedroom where the last Republican mayor of Mijas hid for 30 years.
For art enthusiasts, the C.A.C of Mijas will capture your attention. Located on Malaga Street 28, it has a collection of ceramics by Pablo Picasso. Besides Picasso the museum also has works by Dalí and Miro. Finally, it also exhibits temporary as well as permanent works by other national and international artists.
Mijas is located 22.7 kilometers from the Malaga airport. There are no direct buses, you must catch bus number 120 to Fuenigirola and from there make your way to Mijas.
