Farmers' markets are a popular tradition in Zagreb spanning back to the late 19th Century. Today, there are numerous markets dotted throughout the city, offering an insight into local life and authentic cuisine. Pretty much every single neighbourhood in Zagreb boasts a farmers' market, where you'll get sucked into a lively world filled with colour, sound, and aromatic smells.

Head to the Dolac market, the most popular in the city. Taking place behind the main square in the centre of Zagreb, it sprawls out over two floors and offers a whole host of intriguing stalls. On the top floor there's an open-air market selling everything from souvenirs and clothes to fish and fast food. If you're feeling peckish, the top floor also has a number of bars and restaurants to chill out in and soak up the atmosphere. Downstairs, you'll find enclosed butchers and bakeries and other speciality food stores.

Britanac is another popular market and offers a more intimate vibe than Dolac. It's set in the midst of a rustic square and sells all manner of goods, from fresh fruit and veg to antiques and household items.

The city is also home to a couple of forests. You can find a number of these in the northern neighbourhoods, like Tuskanac and Dubravkin, which you can reach really quickly and easily from the main city square.

Getting into Zagreb from the Airport

Zagreb's Pleso Airport is located just 12km from the city centre, making it particularly easy to get quickly into town. There are a couple of transport options, but by far the best is the local bus service which leaves regularly from the airport to the main bus station in the centre of town. From this bus station you can also travel to various other cities around Croatia as well as destinations in neighbouring countries.

Alternatively, you can hop in a taxi at the airport's taxi rank (located just outside the terminals). Prices are relatively cheap and the journey is quick depending on traffic.
