Turning up in Tossa de Mar

Barcelona's El Prat Airport is the closest to Tossa de Mar, and it's really easy to get there with great transport links. The easiest way is to get the bus from the centre of Barcelona. Do do this, you simple catch the Aerobus to Plaza de Catalunya, where you can then head to the Estacio Nord Bus Station and get the bus direct to Tossa de Mar. Several buses leave through out the day, and there are even more services that run in the summer months.

Alternatively, you can get a taxi from the airport or hire a car. This is a great way to explore the region at your own pace, as it gives you chance to stop off on the way and get to know some of the smaller towns and villages that speckle this part of the Costa Brava coastline.

A Collection of Cultural Gems - Things to do in Tossa de Mar

As well as incredible beaches and a vibrant seaside culture that permeates the town in the summer months, Tossa de Mar is also home to an array of cultural goodies just waiting to be discovered. Our Tossa de Mar apartments are within easy reaching distance of everything on offer.

  • Museu Municipal -- If you want to learn more about the history of Tossa de Mar and its surrounding regions, head to the Museu Municipal, which showcases some of the most important stories that make up the town's heritage. Set in the middle of the old walled town, the museum takes pride of place in a 14th century building. Here, you can wander around exhibits filled with valuable artefacts that hark back to yesteryear.
  • Church of San Vincente -- Back in the day, Vila Vella was home to almost one hundred houses and an impressive church. Today the church is in ruins, but is still a breath-taking scene to explore. In 1757 the Church of San Vincente was built to replace the old church, and it now sits a short distance away from the town's walls.
  • Statue of Ava Gardner -- In the Vila Vella there are plenty of viewpoints to admire, including an eye-catching bronze statue of Ava Gardner, the American actress who starred in Pandora and the Flying Dutchman, a film that was shot in Tossa de Mar.
  • Roman Villa -- This ancient piece of architecture was built when Tossa de Mar was simply known as Turissa. It boasts an eclectic selection of colourful mosaics and evidence of an old swimming pool. Unfortunately, it's not open to visitors, but you can catch a glimpse of it from different spots around town.
  • Cami de Ronda -- Also known as "Ronda Way", this collection of walkways and paths take visitors to some of the most stunning viewpoints around Tossa de Mar, exposing ancient scenes of crumbling castles and picturesque snapshots of beach life and lush blue waters.
  • Sa Riera Park -- Tucked away along the river bank, this beautiful park is filled with colouful blooms, plenty of pretty walkways, and a number of spots to kick back and relax in the sunshine.
  • The Tourist Train -- This little train runs around the narrow streets of Tossa de Mar every day, taking in the historic sights and some of the newer cultural offerings. You can hop on at Playa Gran for a unique way to explore the area.

The Old Town of Tossa de Mar

The walled old town of Tossa de Mar is a sight to behold. It's made up of a tightly woven tapestry of laneways, each one leading down to stunning views of the coastline and beyond.

Around town there are numerous plazas, including the popular Plaza de las Armas which is filled with authentic restaurants and handmade souvenir shops. Elsewhere, tiny museums pop up alongside cosy bars, whilst the smell of freshly cooked fish oozes out of every eatery in sight.

When darkness begins to fall, you can head towards the coast and marvel at the incredible sunset over the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea, before ducking back into the twisting maze of alley ways in the old town and stopping off for a drink along the way.
