Offbeat New York -- Lesser-Known City Hotspots

New York is one of the biggest tourist hotspots in the world and the major attractions can get crowded with the influx of visitors. Luckily, there are a number of offbeat places that many tourists don't know about that offer some peace and quiet away from the bustling city centre.

There's Red Hook, a district of Brooklyn that is touted as 'up-and-coming'. Here you can wander among a huge selection of quirky, independent stores, restaurants, and art galleries, and soak up the creative atmosphere that pulses throughout its waterfront location. It's a bit out of the way, but at the weekend there is a free water taxi that runs from Manhattan.

Then there's the Elevated Acre, which some local New Yorkers don't even know about. Set between high-rise buildings close to Wall Street, this acre of peaceful green space offers the perfect place to grab a coffee and watch the world go by. In summer, it also has a schedule of movies that it shows in its seven-tiered amphitheatre.

Art lovers should check out MoMa PS1, a branch of the Museum of Modern Art that's not nearly as crowded or as well-known. There is a variety of new-age, gritty urban exhibitions that take place here, including a great selection of street art, and there's a cute garden that is constantly being changed to match the current exhibition.

If you're looking to get off the beaten path, our New York apartments can be found dotted around the lesser-known spots in the city.

New York Accommodation

As one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, New York accommodation offers a mixed bag of options for every kind of traveller. Huge, world-famous hotels rub shoulders with memorable attractions, providing a stylish place to stay in one of the world's glitziest cities, whilst rooftop apartment blocks provide a movie backdrop to any trip. There are a range of affordable options, too, from downtown hostels that hug lively bars and all-night restaurants, to studio apartments that look down on bustling streets and the bright lights of the Big Apple.

Navigating New York -- Get From the Airport into Manhattan

New York has no less than 3 airports that service the city. There's the John F. Kennedy International airport which caters to international flights and is located 15 miles from the centre of Manhattan. The best way to get from JFK into town is via the AirTrain, which travels into central Manhattan and connects with the New York subway. Then there's LaGaurdia Airport, which is mainly a domestic airport, and is accessible from Manhattan by an Express Bus and a busy taxi rank outside the terminals. Finally there is the lesser-known Newark-Liberty International airport which is actually located in New Jersey but is the closest transport hub to lower Manhattan. There is a Transit train which traverses frequently between the airport and Pennsylvania Station.
