Places to go in Mijas

  • La Ermita de la Virgin de Peña, located in the Paseo El Compás, was carved into the rock in 1548 by Mercedarian friars. Tradition has it that the Virgin appeared among the walls of the old castle in 1586, remaining hidden throughout the eight centuries that included Muslim rule in the peninsula. Inside there is a viewpoint 428 meters high from where you can use a telescope to observe the Costa del Sol and the Valle de Mijas. Admission costs €3.
  • La Plaza de la Constitución de Mijas is a place you cannot forget to add to the agenda when planning your trip. Whitewashed houses, a fountain and stone benches, shops with typical products from the local cuisine and souvenirs, restaurants with culinary gems, it's a must-see for travelers.
  • La Plaza de Toros was built per the requests of residents in 1900 and is a local cultural gem. Nestled on a rock, the entrance goes unnoticed, you have to know exactly where it is. The most striking thing about it is its unique oval shape. While they no longer have bullfights or the running of the bulls due to protests from foreigners who live in the community, thereis still something mythic that remains from that era.   • Playa Calahonda is in an urbanized area next to the marina of Cabopino. It has fine sand, clean tranquil waters, good services and restaurants. The beach is ideal for swimming and practicing windsurfing or paddle boarding.
  • Playa el Chaparral is one of the ideal places for kite surf and windsurf. The beach has lifeguards and is close to the road that connects Mijas with Fuengirola. There are many bars and restaurants as well as all different types of stores for shopping

Museums in Mijas

The Carromato de Mijas is a museum with unique miniatures from around the world. It's one of the most popular sites in Mijas. The flyers and pamphlets of the museum say it all: Fleas dissected and dressed, a ballet dancer carved into a toothpick, a battle ship on the head of a needle pin, The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci on a grain of rice, etc. The museum has close to 360 miniatures and will provide you with a magnifying glass in order to see them all. Admission costs €3 for adults and €1.50 for kids.

At the Plaza de la Libertad is the Museo Histórico-Etnológico de Mijas, which recreates the history of the old farmers and fishers in Mijas. You can see interesting collections of crafts, farming and fishing tools, oils mills and a replica of a bedroom where the last Republican mayor of Mijas hid for 30 years.

For art enthusiasts, the C.A.C of Mijas will capture your attention. Located on Malaga Street 28, it has a collection of ceramics by Pablo Picasso. Besides Picasso the museum also has works by Dalí and Miro. Finally, it also exhibits temporary as well as permanent works by other national and international artists.

How to get to Mijas

Mijas is located 22.7 kilometers from the Malaga airport. There are no direct buses, you must catch bus number 120 to Fuenigirola and from there make your way to Mijas.

Another very popular option is taking a taxi from the Malaga airport, don't forget to agree on the price before getting in. And for enjoying your holidays at your own pace, the best option is to rent a car form the airport so you can move freely throughout the region.
