Places to go in Dubai

  • The traditional neighborhood Al Bastakiya is a stereotype of traditional Dubai culture. You can wander the streets and discover the mysterious world of Emirati culture. There are houses with very well maintained courtyards, with interesting windcatchers to stay cool when it's hot staying cool. Wealthy merchants lived in the area and today you can find art galleries, nice cafes for escaping the midday heat and restaurants with local cuisine.
  • Sheikh Mohammed Center for Cultural Understanding is a cultural center for tourists who want to discover the Bastakiya neighborhood. Here you can sample tea with sweets at specialized places, something very typical of the local cuisine.
  • The Jumeirah Mosque is Dubai's most famous Mosque and the only one that allows non-Muslims to go inside. However you cannot enter with shorts or tank tops and women must be veiled. The visits are guided. This mosque deserves a visit.
  • Al Mamzar Beach Park is the best public beach in Dubai, located 10 kilometers away from Deira, it has an entry time and you must pay for access. Boasting fine sand and warm water, it's also equipped with showers, beach bars, pools and playgrounds for kids.
  • Palmera Jumeirah is one of the most well known attractions Dubai has to offer. It's an urbanization in the shape of a palm built on the water, where the luxurious hotels and private mansions with private beaches are found. The best option for visiting this marvel of engineering is from the Observatory of the Hotel Dubai Marriot Harbor.
  • Ski Dubai is the biggest ice skating rink in the world. Inside you can be at below freezing temperatures while outside it's more than 40ºC.
  • Deira is the old urban center of Dubai. Here you can find the Gold Souk, with three hundred stores specializing in gold jewelry. There is also the Spices Souk, with perfumes made from all the spices of the world and different varieties of tea. The Heritage House, a residence from the late nineteenth century, belonged to a wealthy pearl merchant. It comes to life at night but isn't recommended for tourists.
  • Dubai Mall is the biggest shopping mall in the world with the most visitors, which earned it the name "Shopping capital of the Middle East". Located in Down Town Dubai, it has 1,200 shops and 14,000 parking spaces.
  • TheMadinat Jumeirah Souk is a shopping complex built like a traditional souk. You can buy souvenirs, clothing and fabric. You can also have a drink at one of its many bars, restaurants or terraces that have the feeling of an ancient arabic city. In addition, you can go for a ride in an abra, a traditional wooden boat, or enjoy views from the Al Burj Al Arab at 321 meters high. If you stroll through this area it may seem like you're walking through a tale of the Arabian Nights.

Lookouts and Museum

The two lookouts of Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, are located 442 meters and 555 meters high, giving you a panoramic view of the city. It's recommended that you buy the entry tickets on the website because they can run out far in advance. The Burj Khalifa measures 828 meters high and is a stylized copy of the New York City skyscrapers from the early twentieth century. If you like the feeling of vertigo, this is the right city for your holidays, and if the feeling of vertigo scares you then this is the city that will allow you to try and overcome that fear.

A place you must visit is the Dubai Museum, located in the Al Fahidi Fort, built in 1787 to protect against invaders. From the imposing building, the oldest in the city, to the interesting exhibits and permanent collections, this museum will guide you through the history, anthropology and economy of Dubai.

How to get to Dubai

The Dubai International Airport is in Al Garhoud 5 kilometers from Dubai. The bus line number 401 will take you to the Deira neighborhood and the 402 line to Bur Dubai. The metro is an efficient and inexpensive way of getting to Dubai. Lastly, you can always use the taxi service or rent a car to go at your own pace.
