A Cultural Encounter in Alcudia's Ancient Town Centre

The town centre of Alcudia spans back to 1229 when the Catalan conquest took place. Since then, a series of historic landmarks have popped up around the town, making it the perfect place to take a walk through time.

The medieval walls were built by King Jaume II to protect the town from the nearby sea, but it was also to protect the northeast of the island from attack by outsiders. The walls themselves were built towards the end of the 13th century and still span 1.5km around the town centre.

Along the medieval walls there are several city gates that lead out towards different parts of the island. Today, you can wander the walls and check out the gates, some of which are incredibly impressive and ornate in their designs.

Sant Jaume's church is another popular pitstop in the town. Situated alongside the medieval walls, the 14th century Catholic church has been a solid part of Alcudia's history for hundreds of years. As well as showcasing some of the town's fascinating history, there is also the Parish Museum onsite which hosts a religious art exhibition throughout the year.

Towards the end of the 17th century, the Chapel of Sant Crist was built. The Baroque-style chapel is home to an altarpiece of a carving of Sant Crist which can be visited by the public.

Elsewhere, you can find numerous casals -- restored houses from the 16th century. These fascinating facades were renovated to keep up with the stylistic changes of the times and many of them have been well preserved into the present day. Can Torro is one of the more popular casals, which is home to the public library of Can Torro, whilst Can Fondo is home to the oldest shield in the city. For more, you can head to Can Calvo , Can Canta , and the Ajuntament (town hall), which was built by Carles Garau in 1929 in a similar style to the other casals in town.

We have a number of Alcudia apartments that line the narrow streets of the old town, placing you right in the centre of all the historic action.
